Disability and Access provides individualized accommodations and services to remove access barriers that affect students’ ability to participate fully in their educational experience.

Equal Access and the Law
UT operates in accordance with three federal laws that protect the rights of students with disabilities. Together, these laws ensure equal access to education, campus facilities and digital resources.
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in any program or activity that receives federal financial assistance. Under Section 504, UT cannot limit admission, exclude students from courses, provide less financial assistance or establish policies that limit participation for students with disabilities.
Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Requires universities to ensure that electronic and information technology is accessible. At UT, this means websites must support screen readers for blind or visually impaired users. Additionally, videos must include captions for Deaf and hard of hearing users and audio descriptions for blind and low vision users.
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Civil rights law that covers employment, state and local governments, public accommodations and telecommunications. The ADA also requires existing facilities remove barriers when doing so is achievable and doesn’t involve significant difficulty or expense. New construction and renovations must comply with the Texas Accessibility Standards.
ADA Amendments Act of 2008
Clarifies and expands the original ADA by broadening the definition of major life activities. It also specifies that mitigating measures, such as medication, prosthetics or assistive technology, should not be considered when determining eligibility for accommodations.
