Students with disabilities are still eligible to use accommodations in online courses, although the type of accommodations needed may be different than what is needed in a traditional classroom setting. Online classes offer flexibility that often works well for students with disabilities; however, there are some unique considerations when thinking about taking a course online.
Distance Learning for Students with Disabilities provides an overview of distance learning as well as some potential benefits and challenges of this type of learning.
At UT, many online courses are offered through University Extension (UEX): https://extension.utexas.edu/. D&A works with UEX to review and approve accommodation requests. See below for information on how to receive accommodations for University Extension courses.
UT student registered with D&A:
- Complete the Request for UEX Accommodations Form
UT student not registered with D&A:
- UT students must register with D&A in order to use accommodations for University Extension courses. See How to Register for more information.
Non-UT student taking University Extension courses:
- Complete the Request for UEX Accommodations Form
- Submit documentation of disability from a licensed healthcare professional to D&A
- See our Documentation Guidelines for additional information on what disability documentation is necessary
- Supporting documentation should be sent via one of the following options:
Mail:
The University of Texas at Austin
Disability and Access
Attn: Placement Exams
100 W. Dean Keeton St. A4100
Austin, TX 78712-0175
Email: access@austin.utexas.edu
Fax: 512-475-7730
- You can email access@austin.utexas.edu to make sure all paperwork was received. Requests will not be reviewed until the request form and the supporting disability documentation have both been submitted to D&A.
D&A does not typically implement or proctor testing accommodations for students enrolled in UEX courses. Students needing to use accommodations on their exams will need to coordinate these arrangements with their approved testing site and/or proctor.
