UT Scholarships for Students with Disabilities

Eric M. Suhl Endowed Scholarship
The Eric M. Suhl Scholarship was established in 2019 with funding provided by the Eric M. Suhl Foundation. The Foundation was formed to honor Eric, who lived with colitis for many years and passed away in 2016 at the age of 28. This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Eric and is directed to help UT students who live with colitis, Crohn’s, IBS, or any chronic medical issue.

At least one scholarship for a minimum of $1000 will be awarded each fall for use during the academic year.  If funding is available, additional scholarships and/or scholarships of a larger monetary value will be awarded.  Applications are accepted during the spring semester and are awarded in the fall semester. Applications can be found via LASSO.

Lois Ford LaBauve Scholarship
This scholarship is given in memory of Lois Ford La Bauve. Ms. La Bauve was a Texas schoolteacher for many years and always displayed a passion for learning. She was the director of Services for the Blind and Disabled at the Texas State Library and founded the Texas Talking Book program. At least one scholarship for a minimum of $500 will be awarded per year for students who have a disability that impairs their ability to access printed material. If funding is available, additional scholarships and/or scholarships of a larger monetary value will be awarded. Applications are reviewed during the spring semester. Scholarship is awarded in the fall semester. Applications can be found via LASSO.

Margaret Nosek Scholarship
For students who will be at the senior, master, or doctoral level in the next academic year. They must certify that they have a disability that causes a significant functional limitation in one or more major life activities. Applicants must provide evidence of ambition to pursue a career in research in any academic area. Preference will be given to traditionally underrepresented groups.

Carole L. Zoom Endowed Scholarship
For students with physical disabilities that are enrolled in at least six hours at UT Austin, with preference given to students with a mobility disability. Applicants must have at least a minimum 2.5 UT GPA. Financial need may be used to distinguish among applicants. Applications can be found via LASSO.

Will Rogers Memorial Scholarship
The Will Rogers Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a limited number of qualified students registered at The University of Texas at Austin. This scholarship is intended for disabled students or non-disabled students studying to work with disabled individuals, especially disabled children. “Disabled” in this context shall refer to students who have a physical or non-physical disability, including mental and spiritual hardships and obstacles caused by the environment and lack of opportunity. Financial need may be used to distinguish among applicants. Applications can be found via LASSO.

The Karen Wolffe & Terry Hirsh Scholarship
The Karen Wolffe & Terry Hirsh Scholarship was established in 2021 to provide scholarship support to one or more undergraduate students who have a visual disability and who are pursuing a degree/career in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math). In addition to tuition, the scholarship may be used for housing, living expenses, or University of Texas at Austin fees. Applications are accepted during the spring semester and are awarded in the fall semester. Applications can be found via LASSO.

James M. Young Endowment

Young Endowment provides funding that is intended for currently enrolled UT students with disabilities needing financial support for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to: emergency funds, ongoing disability-related educational expenses, professional development opportunities, attending conferences/trainings and associated travel expenses, assistive technology, unexpected educational or disability-related expenses, and study abroad programs.
