Using Testing Accommodations

It is very important for students and instructors to discuss which accommodations may be necessary based on the structure of the course (online, hybrid or in person). Some accommodations may already be built into online course design, while other accommodations may still need to be provided on an individual basis.

Student and Instructor Testing Accommodation Discussion:

    1. Students should discuss accommodation letters with each instructor at the beginning of the semester to determine which accommodations are needed and how they will be provided.
    2. Determine which testing accommodation option will be used: testing accommodations provided by instructor, use of departmental testing space, or reserving space at the Campus Testing Center or in the D&A Assistive Technology Education Center.
    3. Confirm that student and instructor are in agreement about the arrangements that have been made. If there is any concern by either party about the arrangements or accommodations, contact the student’s Coordinator for guidance.
    4. Regardless of how testing accommodations will be provided, students should remind instructors about testing accommodations at least five days before the test

Options for Accommodated Testing Spaces at UT:

  • Campus Testing Center:  Campus Testing Center is available to provide testing accommodations for students with accommodations. Instructors and students will need to reserve space in advance in order to use the Campus Testing Center.
  • Instructors proctoring tests: Instructors can choose to provide testing accommodations directly to students or have their TAs assist with proctoring. Examples of a reduced distraction environment include; a separate classroom (with several other students also testing and a proctor), a quiet space (e.g. conference room), TA’s office, and instructor’s office. Inappropriate locations include; a hallway, stairwell, a shared office or busy space (e.g. ringing phones, foot traffic, etc.).
  • Departmental testing spaces: Some colleges, schools and departments within UT have their own designated testing space for students using accommodations. Instructors can inquire about the resources available through their department.
  • Testing Space with D&A: The testing space within D&A is primarily reserved for students who need to use the technology within the Assistive Technology Education Center. Instructors and students must reserve this space in advance.

Important Notes for Students:

  • If a testing accommodation is not in place as was previously agreed upon by you and the instructor, notify the proctor immediately.
  • If the instructor refuses to provide an approved accommodation, contact D&A immediately.

Reserving testing space in the Campus Testing Center & ATEC Lab

Students and Instructors will begin use RegisterBlast, to book accommodated tests in the CTC. More information on how to use RegisterBlast is available on the CTC website.

Test request process for the CTC:

  • Scheduled tests must be submitted by the instructors at least 5-business days (1 week) prior to the test date for students to test with the Campus Testing Center (CTC).
  • Students must reserve their seats with the CTC at least 3 days (72 hours) prior to the scheduled test date.
  • For more information on how to request accommodated testing with the CTC, please visit the How to Reserve Space in the Campus Testing Center
  • Instructors have three options to submit tests to the CTC. Instructors can upload tests through RegisterBlast, send via email (Campustesting@austin.utexas.edu) or hand deliver to the Campus Testing Center (George L Sanchez Building (SZB) 5th floor, suite 5.102) at least 24 hours before the exam.

Students testing at the CTC or ATEC Lab are expected to uphold UT’s dedication to academic integrity by following the Student Honor Code. Students found in violation of the UT Honor Code will be referred to the office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity for investigation and potential disciplinary action.
