Once you request your accommodation letter, follow up with each instructor to discuss how your accommodations will be provided in the course. Most instructors want to have this conversation early in the semester because it helps them understand how to make the course accessible for you and helps you understand how each accommodation will work in practice.
Before You Reach Out
Read the syllabus.
Check what the syllabus says about course structure, assignments, attendance and exams. You may find that some accommodations don’t apply to the course, or that a TA or second instructor needs to be included in the conversation.
Know which accommodations apply.
Accommodations are individualized for each student, not each class. Think about which ones you’ll actually need. For example, if your instructor already posts slides for the whole class, you may not need to discuss the “access to materials shown in class” accommodation. Online courses may also require different accommodations than in-person ones.
