Testing Accommodation Types
Extended Time
Gives you additional time (time and a half or double time) to complete exams, quizzes and in-class writing assignments. It doesn’t apply to exams without time limits.
Reduced Distraction Environment
Gives you access to a quieter testing space with fewer distractions than a standard classroom. It isn’t a guarantee of a completely distraction-free space.
Use of a Calculator
Allows you to use a calculator during exams as long as it can’t perform the functions being tested. Your instructor will approve the specific calculator you’ll use.
Use of a Computer for Essay Exams
Allows you to use a computer for essay exams so you can type responses rather than handwrite them. You may test at the Campus Testing Center or use a personal computer approved by your instructor.
Use of Spell Check
Allows you to use a basic dictionary or spell-check device during exams so spelling and grammar don’t interfere with demonstrating your knowledge of the material.
Use of Assistive Technology
Authorizes the use of assistive technology during exams. In most cases, you’ll need to reserve space in the ATEC Lab through RegisterBlast.
Where to Test
You and your instructor will determine the testing option that best meets your course requirements and approved accommodations. Students testing at the CTC or ATEC Lab expected to follow UT’s Student Honor Code. Violations are referred to Student Conduct and Academic Integrity in the Office of the Dean of Students.
Campus Testing Center
The primary testing location for students with accommodations at UT.
Location: George L. Sanchez Building (SZB) 5th Floor, Suite 5.102
Reserve space in advance through RegisterBlast.
Assistive Technology Education Center (ATEC) Lab
Testing space for students using adaptive equipment during exams.
Location: Student Services Building (SSB), Room 3.220
Reserve space in advance through D&A.
Instructor or Departmental Space
Your instructor may proctor your exam directly or arrange testing space through their department. Spaces should be quiet and private.
Online Courses
Some accommodations may already be built into online courses. Discuss with your instructor which accommodations still need to be arranged individually.
Placement Exams
D&A works with Testing and Evaluation Services (TES) to arrange accommodations for placement exams. Submit your request at least five business days before your exam.
UT Math Assessment (UTMA)
The UTMA is designed to be accessible for most students.
If you have concerns about accessibility, reach out to readiness@cns.utexas.edu before submitting an accommodations request.
How to Submit your Request for Placement Exam Accommodations
Accommodations approved for placement exams only apply to those exams and do not automatically carry over to your UT courses. To receive accommodations in your classes, you’ll need to register separately with D&A.

Testing Accommodation Issues
If a testing accommodation isn’t in place as agreed, notify the proctor immediately. If your instructor refuses to provide an approved accommodation, contact D&A as soon as possible.
